Product Placements? Ask J-LO!

The whole idea of placing specific products in strategic scenes(Music videos and movies) is for these products to be indirectly and subconsciously advertised to the intended audience using the lead actor/actress in the video. These celebrities get free access to these products and services to use as props in their video, so its a win win really for both parties involved.

Its quite popular in the Hollywood industry and has been done relatively well without appearing too forced. Can the same be said for the Nollywood industry though? NO! We still have quite a bit to go to achieve  seamless and realistic product placements in our videos and movies.

Go through these with me for a minute please, oh and these screen-shots are from J-LO’s I ain’t yo mama video’

  1. Look at the subtle but clear placement of this Peuterey jacket, you can see it but it just looks super natural like it wasn’t a deliberate move. Perfect placement!!!

2. She actually drank from this cup, if you watch the video you would see how it was a natural thing to drink a cup of Lavazza coffee on a cold rainy day jlo2

3. Nothing wrong with blow-drying your hair with an Xtava hair dryer is there? Again, look at how this drier has been deliberately but subtly placed in this visual jlo3

4. A little ‘Bravo’ goes a looong way doesn’t it? Guys, look at how natural J-lo looks cleaning with her bucket, gloves and cleaning liquid. Need I say more?jlo4

5. This scene was definitely inspired by the ‘Mad Men’ series, can Mad Men please come back on air? I was so obsesseddddd with this shoowwwww! Lol okay I digress, that bottle of Beluga vodka seemed like something a Don Draper would have poured himself while reeling off a bunch of ideas to his ever loyal Peggy. jlo6

I think at this point we all get what it is I am trying to show with these stills? Clever and tasteful product placements throughout the entire video. It didn’t seem forced, J-Lo/the other models  didn’t look out of place using these products and It wasn’t in our faces screaming ‘buy me’, ‘use me’ Lol!

On the other hand, see how badly we have placed these Nigerian brands in our own visuals. I think we can all learn a thing or two from the video/branding mentioned above. Enjoy below

  1. This is a scene from Figurine the movie, WHY is that big pack of Lucozade Boost just chilling a bit too aimlessly on the table? It just screams, ‘hey look at me in my full yellow glory’ as opposed to subtly placing it there and whipping past it. I get the sense that these brands want their full airtime as they may most likely have sponsored the movie. There’s nothing wrong with reaping your benefits, just doing so tactfully is all we require that’s all!

2. These ones are THE WORST!!! Glo sponsored this movie(Phone Swap) and boy did they rub it in our faces that they did! From almost all of the movie props being the color green to Glo umbrellas, I mean, the movie should have been titled ‘The Glo Swap’, it would have made more sense yo!

Just Negodu!!! LOL!
